Does it matter if you are a morning person?
First Published 20 May 2021
I came across a couple of articles this week discussing the merits of being a morning person. In recent years, many ‘experts’ and business leaders have talked about getting up earlier and earlier as the only real way to be successful.
Those of you who know me well will know that I have never really managed to buy in to this, or at least never managed to achieve it. So, these articles have totally made my day!
1. Why You Don’t Have to be a Morning Person to be Productive
2. If You Aren’t a Morning Person, Neuroscience Says Please Stop Trying to Be
The key theme running through them (in my interpretation at least) is one of my favourite phrases… “You do you!” I find I am at my best when I am working at a time that suits me (she says as she is typing this at 23:15 and still wide awake). Yes – I can function at ‘daft o’clock’ (if I have to) but I know that I much prefer to work late and sleep late. And now I have some scientific proof to tell me this is ok! As well as a wee nudge to get enough sleep that’s right for you – some people can thrive on 4 hours a night, I am not one of those people!
So perhaps take a moment to skim read through these articles. Or better yet, take a moment to think about your own sleep patterns and ideal work times.
- Do you focus better in the morning or afternoon?
- Do you naturally wake up as the sun rises or is it a battle to get up after hitting snooze for an hour (this may be me…),
- are you falling asleep around 9pm or still wide awake into the A.M. hours?
The Healthline article (link 1 above) does suggest tips for coping with the 9-5 if you have to. If like me you can chose your hours then do what works for you – just please don’t ask me for an appointment before 10am….
Speaking of which – hit the contact us link and book in (nudge nudge, hint hint)!
And not that we need it but, I’m taking this as permission that “you do you” is a great wee mantra to live by!
