What does happy mean?

What does it mean to be happy?

First Published 22 July 2021

I saw a post when I was scrolling through social media this week that observed we are often asked how our jobs our health or are relationships are but not asked if we are happy.

I pondered this and realised that it’s quite true – I think I want to add that question to my conversation openings in future.  But taking it one step further – what does it actually mean to be happy?

Happiness is subjective, I think it is different for everyone and can even be different depending on the situation and/or circumstances.

Is it a feeling of lightness; to laugh; to smile; to be comfortable; to be full of joy – or something else entirely?  I invite you to ponder with me.  What does happy look like or feel like for you?  And what does it take for you to feel happy?  I’d love to hear your thoughts but what I’d love even more is that you take a pause and work out what your answer to this question is for you – write it down, voice record or even do a video diary if that helps – but please do take that pause.  It will be worth it.

What does it mean to you to be happy?
