Are you triggered?

Are you triggered?

First Published 12 May 2022

This month on Therapists in Conversation we talked all things triggers!

I personally feel that this word is possibly overused.  When it comes to mental health, the word triggered refers to the experience of having an emotional reaction to a disturbing topic, which then leads to extreme overwhelm and/or distress – usually because this ‘trigger’ is a reminder of a past trauma.

If this is the case – I am not sure the last time I was truly triggered.  Annoyed, frustrated or p*ssed off perhaps but not triggered.

Either way – I still wonder if these sometimes extreme emotional responses are a good thing.  They shine a light on unresolved stuff – and only when we can see this ‘stuff’ can we fully process, deal with and move past it.

Have a listen to the conversation (video below) and let me know what you think.  Are you triggered by certain words or situations?  Would you like to dissolve the stress that these triggers cause?  If so – leave me a comment, or click one of the many options on the site to book a call (a zoffee might be the easiest!).
