Is Consistency important?

Is Consistency important?

First Published 29 September 2022

Is there a need for consistency?  When we think of creating new habits or behaviours, consistency usually comes up as a key factor.

When we are little we are taught the importance of consistently brushing our teeth.  Two years ago we were reminded of the importance of consistently washing our hands.  Apps like duolingo encourage consistency through gamification and reminders on a daily basis to open the app and spend time each day learning.

These are simple small examples.  But they have long reaching benefits/implications.  In our adult years – do we still have our teeth?  Did we manage to avoid the dreaded COVID or did we end up wishing we had bought shares in moisturising soap as our hands got really dry? Perhaps we are now able to order a meal in a new language and fully understand every word the waiter says?

We owe it to ourselves to consistently be true to ourselves – well, after all, everyone else is already taken!

A benefit of consistency is that we then get to be known as reliable, trustworthy, or even perhaps as inspirational especially if we are always ‘smashing our goals’ as we make a plan and stick to it – yep – consistently!

And thinking of consistency – this week is the anniversary of me being ‘talked in to’ a weekly e-mail.  (even if I didn’t quite manage to get this out at 10am today 🤦🏻‍♀- for those of you that maybe weren’t here from the start – that first mail was titled ‘lights, camera. action’).  When I started writing these I didn’t think I had it in me to keep writing, coming up with topics, and sending them out weekly, let alone still be doing them 2 years on!  But here we are.

I do hope you find them to be interesting/useful reading.  If there is anything you would like me to focus on or go in to a little deeper, do please reach out and I’ll see what I can do.

In the meantime, I am going to pose a couple of question (and I am going to ponder them for myself too):

  • where in your life are you showing up consistently, and when was the last time you celebrated that?  And,
  • where in your life are you not showing up consistently?  For this one, do you want to do something more consistently and if so how can you make that happen.  Alternatively, make a decision to not.  Just make sure you are the one making the choices on how you are showing up!
