When did you last Blow your Own Trumpet?
First Published 10 November 2022
Most weeks my ideas for writing these e-mails appear like a trickle on a Thursday morning that I have to tease out and then take shape.
This week it feels like it’s been a bit more forceful – kinda like the light bulb 💡 hit me across the back of the head before it hovered above me!
This week:
- I attended a networking meeting and answered the group question of “what is something you know really well?”,
- I was asked to provide a one pager of my experiences for a voluntary role I was ‘applying’ for,
- I am working with a marketing specialist who is pulling together my experiences to help better sell my services to corporate clients, and
- a group program I am building with a fellow kinesiologist is requiring me to write my ‘origin story’ (more about this coming soon)
But why am I telling you this?
After I threw together the one pager I then read it back, and had a moment of realisation of ‘wow’ I’ve done and achieved loads! And if I spent a wee bit longer and fleshed it out a bit more than just bullet points, I think I would be even more impressed with me.
But unless we put it on paper and read it back, it is really easy to forget all that we have done and succeeded at in our lives.
A point to note is that this isn’t done to ‘show off’, rather as a reminder of just how awesome we all are! It’s about being our authentic selves and in doing that being able to be more true to ourselves and maybe even building our self worth!
Perhaps the thought of writing our origin stories feels a bit better than blowing our trumpets? Stereotypically it’s not something us Brits are good at, or comfortable doing – and it’s even more out of the comfort zone for us if we a are women and Scottish too!
So, just in the same way that Superman and Iron Man et al have their origin stories, I challenge you to write your own. Even if you never show it to anyone else, write it and then read it back to yourself. Start with bullet points if the concept feels too icky.
You may be surprised at just how awesome you really are – and if the awesome isn’t jumping off the page, give me a call and we can tease out your awesome together!
