What would life be like if you erased your limits?

Living Unlimited

What would life be like if there were no limits?

Perhaps we need to start by thinking about two aspects.

  • Firstly, what is a dream life for you?  (I know my vision of a dream life changes regularly but there is usually some common thread running through it all)
  • And secondly – what are the limits we are holding that stops us achieving the dream?

If we don’t have a direction for what we want to achieve and how we want to live, it can make it really tricky to get there.  My suggestion would be to brainstorm it.

Either grab a journal or record a voice note of a stream of consciousness of what you would like life to be like.
Alternatively, mind map on a huge sheet of paper, or even get creative and make a vision board.

Once you have a straw man of what you want to achieve, work out what’s stopping you.  In most cases you will find that it is you that is getting in your own way.

Whether it’s a mindset that’s keeping you from taking the steps needed, a belief that you can’t do something, that little voice in your head spewing negatives, or perhaps even a ‘well meaning’ friend who relies on you staying exactly as you are because that keeps them feeling safe, or any other reason that might be floating around – it’s time to face the limits.

I had a great chat yesterday about this very topic.  The analogy given to me was to imagine a hot air balloon.  The only thing keeping it grounded were the sand bags.  In order to release a sandbag, first you have to choose one.  To release it you need both hands – which was a great reminder to deal with one limit at a time.  Once you release enough, you will begin to float.  The more you deal with, the higher and further you can go.  (I did have another chat about this using tea bags as an analogy – but as that was during the recording of the next episode of Therapists in Conversation – there will be more about that the week after next when the episode is available to watch!)

So, I am off to confirm the direction I want to go in, to plot my course and then to investigate the sandbags that are preventing my remaining or newly formed sandbags so that I can achieve the air that I need to keep up my momentum.

If you need any support to choose your direction, figure out your sand bag contents or to let the sandbags go, please do reach out.  Even if you think your limits are silly and small, or huge and unsurmountable – there is a way through, we just need the right support and tools to keep moving.

As always, link to a coffee chat is open and appointments for sessions are available too.

In the meantime – I am off to try to get rid of the earworm of the ‘No Limits’ song from the 90s that is now stuck in my head! 😂
