How do you navigate the Emotional Rollercoaster of life?

How do you navigate the Emotional Rollercoaster of life?

Have you ever watched a SpaceX launch (or any other agency’s launch)?  I was glued to the screen at lunch time today as I watched the latest test flight.

Everything is smooth sailing, the countdown begins, they get the go for launch, there is a fiery ignition and the rocket is on it’s way.  Pure exhilaration!

The images are being sent back to the control centre and transmitted around the globe, the excitement builds and then in the blink of an eye, something goes wrong and… silence.  The picture may disappear and it’s nail biting, time to sit on the edge of your seat waiting to see if the picture or the technical readings may come back online…..

The emotions go from triumphant anticipation (with a giddiness and probably a big grin!to crushing disappoint in a heartbeat – perhaps extended by a lingering touch of hope until enough time passes that all hope is lost and that disappointment is overwhelming.

Japan’s Space One launch had that crushing disappointment mere seconds after launch yesterday.

Meanwhile, today SpaceX launched their latest test flight and at around 48 minutes after launch, as it was attempting re-entry the communication was lost…  While it is likely the test overall will be seen as a success, the hope that it would reconnect, before the disappointment when it was confirmed the Starship was lost was still very real.

Life can very easily throw us similar emotional curveballs.

One minute we are celebrating success, the next grappling with a setback.  This constant rollercoaster can leave us feeling overwhelmed and, quite frankly, lost for words.

Far too often, we lack the vocabulary to accurately label our emotions.  We might say/think ‘I feel bad’ – which barely scratches the surface of what we are actually feeling.  Beneath this umbrella lies a multitude of feelings – perhaps including frustration, disappointment, sadness, and anger, there may also be confusion and hope in there too just to add to the mix!

This is where understanding the dance between emotions is crucial.

It brought to mind a favourite song of mine – and the video feels pretty relevant too – you can find it on Facebook – it is simply called ‘The Dance’ – the line in the song that keeps coming back to me is:

“Our lives are better left to chanceI could have missed the pain, But I’d have had to miss the dance”

Lyrics by Tony Arata

Life will continue to throw the curveballs, the good, the bad and the unexpected.  The key is not to resist the dance, rather acknowledge the full spectrum of emotions that arise.  If our emotions were on a flat line, there would be no high’s or low’s, no good or bad, the key is to acknowledge the lows and work our way back up after processing what comes up for us.

So, how do we navigate this emotional rollercoaster?

Well, we can start by building our emotional vocabulary:  work on recognising specific emotions like worry, joy or frustration allows us to better understand ourselves and communicate much more effectively.  Maybe invest in an emotion wheel to help. (you can download a pdf from the University of Central Arkansas here)

We can also work on our Mind-body connection.  Our bodies often hold on to unprocessed emotions.  As most of you will know by now, I can help to unlock these trapped emotions through a unique blend of muscle testing and coaching techniques, and if required with hypnotherapy too!
