Choose Your Hard
I came across a reel on one of the social platforms the other day that got me thinking – and so, naturally, I need to share the joys of my ponderings and thinkings with you!
The reel was a discussion around choosing your hard. We have many choices in life, some easier than others, and the work required after the decision has the potential to be easy or hard…
Life throws us challenges and whatever we choose to do with these challenges – at least in the short term – can make our lives easier or harder… I think the the key here is choosing your hard.

If we think about it: indulging in a late-night screen binge (whether it’s a TV show, a film or endless reels/shorts on socials) might seem tempting in the moment, but the ‘hard’ arrives in the morning in the form or the fight with the duvet to get up, and feeling sluggish and grumpy and knackered all day.
Opting for the meal that is full of all the yumminess that doesn’t agree with your system over the ‘boring no joy’ option (it’s all about perceptions here) that your system can digest easily, might seem great in the moment, but come the morning when you want to curl up in the bathroom for the day and not move from there is a far greater pain in the bottom (pun intended!).
The Myth of “Easy”
How often do we chase the elusive ‘easy’ option? We may even convince ourselves that there must be a way to avoid the difficult stuff altogether. But the truth is, true ease often comes from facing the ‘hard’ head-on. Sure, skipping the gym for a week might feel good now, but neglecting our health can lead to a long-term ‘hard’ that will eventually catch up.
Making Peace with “Hard”
But, here’s the kicker… all choices have their difficulties. There’s no escaping ‘hard’, but we can choose which hard we want to face, and how we will face it.
Hard Choice #1: Eat right for you, exercise regularly, and prioritise ‘me time’ and sleep. If this isn’t something that is already a habit, it might require discipline, effort, and dare I say it – pain. The payoff is a healthy and energetic life.
Hard Choice #2: Embrace the unhealthy for you habits now. It might feel easier in the moment (and provide more pleasure), but the long-term consequences can be devastating.
Embrace the Long Game
Remember, we don’t get to choose if/when life throws that spanner in the works. What we do get to choose is how we respond. Will we run towards instant gratification of unhealthy choices, knowing that the long-term ‘hard’ will be a foregone conclusion? Or will we choose the “hard” of discipline, self-care and self-compassion, knowing it leads to a healthier, happier life?
As the saying goes – if we don’t make time for our well-ness, we will be forced to take time for our ill-ness. So, if it has to be hard, choose the hard path that leads to well-being, because in the long run – that is the only path to true ease.
