How to Use Your Daily “Account” Effectively
First published 15 August 2024
How often have you felt like there just aren’t enough hours in the day?
We all start each morning with a metaphorical “time account,” full of potential. But unlike a bank account, unused minutes don’t roll over. ⏳ In the latest episode of Therapists in Conversation (check it out here: Therapists in Conversation: Timely Time Taming), we discuss the psychology of time management and how our relationship with time impacts stress and well-being.

One key concept that resonates for me when thinking about time is the idea of “time as a finite resource.”
Every minute spent on one activity takes away from another.
Accepting this idea can feel daunting or it can be empowering.
So, what can you do to manage your “time account” more effectively?
- Identify Time Traps: Are mindless activities draining your minutes? Social media (doom) scrolling, perfectionism, or even a cluttered workspace can all be time thieves.
- Prioritise ruthlessly: Not all tasks are created equal. Focus on high-impact activities that align with your goals. And if you remember one of my previous notes, priority never used to be plural – can you pick the one real priority and work on just that?
- Schedule intentionally: Block out time for work, relaxation, and self-care. This is one that can be a challenge – I know that if something is in my calendar that involves someone else, it will happen – if it is something for me, it often gets pushed or ignored… (note to self – I’m just as important as anyone else, and if you struggle with this, this is a note to you too!)
- Learn to say no: Respect your time and boundaries. It’s okay to decline requests that don’t fit within your schedule. (yep, another one I haven’t been honouring this month so I am working on strengthening my ‘no’ muscle too…)
