I’m Facing A Book Club Conundrum
Isn’t it funny how life likes to presents us with seemingly trivial choices that can lead to unexpected dilemmas.
My book club this week has provided me with the perfect example.
We found ourselves grappling with a simple decision: which books to choose for our 2025 reading list.
We had too many good options! And after the initial vote, a five-way tie emerged, leaving us to make a tough decision.
Now this choice clearly does not have earth-shattering consequences, but, it still sparked some internal debate. (and once I finish writing this I am off to make my final choice 😂)
It did get me thinking about the broader concept of choice though.
These days, we are near constantly bombarded with decisions, whether they are big or small.
From choosing what to eat for breakfast (or even if we want to eat breakfast) to potentially life-altering decisions like career paths and relationships.
So, how do we navigate this everlasting sea of options?

My Decision-Making Process
I tend to weigh up the pros and cons of each option (or at least that’s always the plan). I aim to consider the potential consequences of each choice.
Oftentimes, I’ll sleep on it to gain some perspective – especially as I have a tendency to decide in the moment that’s the perfect choice (or not) and an hour or 2 later I am can be find myself having major second thoughts!
Alternatively, I can occasionally find myself falling into analysis paralysis, where I end up over thinking every detail – and then finding even more options when I begin to dig deeper!
In those moments, I remind myself that it’s okay to make a decision, even if it’s not perfect.
Few things in life can’t be reversed and, if I truly decide I made the wrong choice, there is likely a way to unpick it (even if it may be costly!)
The Paradox of Choice
Ironically one of the books on the tie breaker is about the overwhelming nature of choice (and is where I got the title for this weeks musings!).
It highlights the paradox of having too many choices. Sometimes, fewer options can lead to less stress and more satisfaction – and if it makes the final cut, you will likely hear more once I have read it 😉 – and I hope it does as I already bought it! Oops!
The Takeaway
Alas, no top tips this week! 😉
Ultimately, the key to making good decisions is to find a balance between careful consideration and decisive action.
We always have an option to seek input from others when necessary, but ultimately, we need to learn to trust our own instincts.
And remember, even the best-laid plans can change. So, embrace the uncertainty and enjoy the journey.
