Living in the Hamster Wheel

The Power of One Step

Do you ever feel like life is one big hamster wheel? (or treadmill if you don’t like the idea of being trapped in a ball)

You might feel like you are putting in a lot of effort, but you’re not really getting anywhere.  Perhaps you feel like you are going through the motions and life is just not that fulfilling anymore.  What worked in the past now doesn’t work or feels stale.

A key point to remember is that you are not alone.  Whilst no one else is going through the exact same thing as you, there are others with similar experiences – remember my favourite quote from the first lockdown?

We are not all in the same boat.  We are all in the same storm.

– Damian Barr

You might not see the results of your efforts straight away, but keep going.  Keep working at it .  One day you will be able to look back and realise just how far you have come.

If however you are on that hamster wheel or treadmill, and have lost sight of what it is you are aiming to achieve, the pause button is really useful.

Whether it’s just a pause to reassess the target and work out if you are still aiming yourself in that direction or if it’s a total re-think, be kind to yourself.  And patient.

Do you still want to achieve the same thing you set out to achieve?  Is this still a valid desire?  Do you still want it, and is it still beneficial to you?

Or, and here’s the potentially scary thought (especially if you are the type that feels the need to finish what you have started) does this target no longer fuel you, serve you or feel beneficial to you?

If you do need to focus on a new target (perhaps a relationship has turned unhealthy, you have a new boss/colleague that you don’t get on with and it’s ruined the job for you, perhaps the reality of the thing isn’t what you hoped for, or you just don’t fancy it anymore) take a moment to choose where you want to head for next.  And re-program your sat nav (yes I know, sorry, I am mixing far too many metaphors/analogies but hopefully you get my drift)

Don’t feel like the need to focus on a new target is a failure.

It’s life (I mean, look what happened in 2020 – I’d bet that threw you off course!),
we all make mistakes,
we all have setbacks,
the important thing is to check that what you want is still what you want and then keep going.

And, above all else, don’t give up on yourself.

You’ve got this.

Just take it one step at a time!

If you need a coach/accountability partner/mentor, I am here and ready to work with you – or if you just need a quick sounding board the complimentary discovery call is still available so book in now.

And in case it hasn’t sunk in – Be kind to yourself!
