Do you ever get that feeling that you are caught in the infinite loop between the “what-ifs” of the future and the “should-haves” of the past?
You are not alone!
In today’s crazy fast-paced world where we feel like we always have to be “on”, it is easy to get swept away by the tides of time, and the collateral damage tends to be the present!
But what if your body already knows the secret to staying present?
This week, after attending a call on the topic of Sushumna (the fact that the word is scarily similar to my middle name definitely caught my attention!). The session was all about the fascinating connection between kinesiology, this ancient concept of Sushumna, and the power of living in the present moment.
Picture this: A simple timeline with an arrow marking the flow of time, labelled Past, Present and Future. Above the ‘Present’ you will find a person, grounded and seemingly oblivious to the time rushing by. The caption reads, “Your body is present. Is your mind?”
(actually – you don’t have to picture it, just look at the image below 😉)

A version of this image was shared on the presentation and it’s what triggered this week’s ponderings!
It highlights the disconnect many of us experience: our bodies are present, going through the everyday motions of daily life, while our minds are lost somewhere amidst our thoughts.
There are many ways to help ground us and bring us back to the present moment (naturally, my ‘tool’ of choice for this is Kinesiology, although I can also work with you on mindfulness if you would like to try that out!).
But what is Sushumna and why should we care? Sushumna is the central energy channel in yogic philosophy, if you could draw it, it would most likely overlap your spine with the Ida and Pingala (the yogic version of Yin and Yang) spiralling around the length of it.
It is a metaphorical pathway for our vital energy – that in-between place between the spiralling of the masculine and feminine energy present in all of us.
This journey to presence may require effort, to begin with. There is a need for self-responsibility and a conscious effort to align our awareness, needs and intentions. When we become aware of our thoughts and emotions, then we can set clear intentions to cultivate and grow a mindful practice.
Want to know a secret? When we embrace this in-between, that space between our thoughts, and breaths, and actions. This space of nothingness is often dismissed as unproductive, or lazy, or the concept of idle hands/minds being the devil’s workshop (ingrained in many since the 14th century!), yet, it is actually a place of magic! It allows us to become a master observer, where we can learn to dance with the tides and life’s ever-changing rhythms.
Are you feeling intrigued yet? If you would like help to unlock the power of presence through Kinesiology (or mindfulness) book in for a discovery call now to find out how to:
- Reduce stress and anxiety by grounding yourself in the here and now
- Improve focus and concentration by quietening the mental chatter
- Boost your energy levels by aligning your body and mind
- Embrace the flow of life by learning to dance with the in-between
If you are ready to step out of the time warp and into the present? Let’s chat.
If you would like to work on this yourself more first, my ‘beginner’s option’ suggestion is to watch the film Disney film Inside Out (see – I’m nice, prescribing a cartoon as ‘homework’) or the more ‘intermediate option’, I suggest reading The Untethered Soul by Michael A Singer (last I checked it is available in the Audible plus catalogue for no extra charge if you are a member/subscriber).
When you are ready to jump right in and be supported, hit me up for a zoffee or a discovery call and let’s work through it together
