The £20-a-Day Supplement Habit That Was Making Her Worse

OK, I don’t know the exact cost, but I know that it was a lot!

My client joined me on screen for her session and when I asked her to get the supplements she was taking, she had to take a few trips to bathroom – and I don’t think she got them all!!
Her before noon supplementation consisted of 18 different pills, powders or liquids.

Some for energy. Some for sleep. Some because an Instagram ad convinced her she needed them. Some because she had spent hours researching and deduced ‘this is just what I need’!

“I know it’s a lot,” she said, “but I’ve bought them now.  Seems like a waste not to finish them.”

However, her body told us something different through muscle testing: she was intolerant to five of them. Another seven were actively draining her energy just to process them.

Her system was working overtime to evacuate what it didn’t need – essentially creating very expensive pee whilst exhausting her in the process – which was the exact opposite to the result she was hoping for. Sound familiar?

The Supplement Trap

We live in a culture of constant bombardment.  This week it’s collagen.  Last month it was vitamin D.  Next week, someone will convince you that you’re desperately deficient in something you’ve never heard of.

Now, I’m not anti-supplement.

When I trained in nutrition, my biggest fear was ending up on a course that was just one long sales pitch for pills and potions.
I was relieved to discover I’d chosen a course with a different outlook: as we were all kinesiologists, we can ask the body what it actually needs with nutrition, just like we do with everything else, then work out how to get the client there – where possible, with food.

Sometimes supplements are absolutely the right answer.  A targeted intervention that gives your body exactly what it’s struggling to get elsewhere, especially when the nutritional value of our foods can be hit or miss.

But handfuls of random pills based on marketing budgets?

That’s not personalised nutrition.

That’s expensive guesswork.

What Your Body Actually Wants

From a kinesiology perspective, your body knows what it needs.  Your Spleen meridian, which governs digestion and transformation of nutrients, knows whether that probiotic is helping or hindering.  Your Kidney meridian, responsible for your constitutional energy, can tell you if those “energy-boosting” supplements are helping or hindering your ability to manage your energy levels..

The Solar Plexus chakra – your centre of personal power and digestion – responds differently to every supplement you take.  Some strengthen it.  Some weaken it.

Most supplement marketing, and even some ‘recommended daily allowances’ completely ignore this and they assume everyone needs the same thing (with the RDA’s typically being based on what is ‘recommended’ to a very specific demographic of men).

They don’t!

So why do we get sucked in to the marketing and advertising?  Is it just down to a recommendation from a favourite celebrity or an influencer / reel star who seems trustworthy now that you have been following them for a while?

Your Supplement Audit

So here’s what I invite you to do this week: gather up everything you’re currently taking and ask yourself honestly – do you remember why you are taking them, and do you know if they are actually helping?

If the answer is “not really” or “I’m just finishing what I bought,” it might be time for a proper audit.  One where we actually ask your body what it wants, what it’s tolerating, and what’s just creating expensive waste.

Your body knows. We just need to listen.

Fancy finding out what yours is trying to tell you?  Drop me a message and let’s have that conversation.

Angela.
